Communicating with
EU citizens:

a two-day workshop

How do you convey information to people as diverse as EU citizens?

Our workshop, ‘Communicating with EU citizens,’ is packed with practical tips to help you connect with this challenging audience.

It’s designed mainly for non-native English speakers who have to communicate in English to people in the European Union, and possibly beyond. However, native speakers will also benefit from the training.

Writing for international audiences
If your job involves using English to communicate with people across several countries, this course could be exactly what you need.

Our tutor is a native British journalist and copywriter, who has written for audiences around the world.

He is highly experienced in teaching non-native English speakers how to write for external communications. In the past few years he has delivered his writing workshops to hundreds of people, in more than 20 cities and across 11 European countries.

Capture your readers’ attention
Whether you are writing to motivate and inspire, to persuade and sell or simply to inform and educate, this workshop will make a difference.

In two highly instructive days our tutor will show you how to:

  • capture the interest and attention of your readers
  • make complex topics more accessible to the general public
  • convey key messages clearly to those who are not native English speakers
  • write in a way that translates safely into other EU languages.

A key aim is to provide tools and techniques that will help you to make the EU and its activities more understandable to ordinary citizens.

From emails to speeches
Many of the people attending these workshops already write English to a high standard. However, they may lack experience in particular types of copywriting.

Our tutor will show you how to convey important messages effectively, using a variety of communication tools.

In particular, he can offer expert guidance on how to write:

  • emails and letters
  • articles and newsletters
  • leaflets and brochures
  • web content, including blogs
  • mailshots
  • advertising copy
  • press releases
  • speeches.

Among other things, you'll be shown how to adapt your writing for both the printed page and electronic media.

Tailored training
A major feature of ‘Communicating with EU citizens’ is that it is closely tailored to your needs. Before the training, our tutor will speak to everyone attending.

He’ll ask about your level of experience as a writer. He’ll also want to know about the kinds of messages you have to convey, the communication channels you use and the audiences you are targeting.

Using this information he will then create a workshop that focuses on the issues of most relevance to you and your colleagues.

Professional appraisal of your work
During the workshop, you will also receive a professional appraisal of your writing. Send our tutor some examples of your work and he will give you a detailed and constructive critique.

He will indicate those aspects of your writing that are working well, while highlighting areas where some changes may be necessary.

You can offer him examples of either:

  • material you have already published
  • draft text that has yet to be published.

What you gain
Our two-day workshop introduces you to a series of tried and tested ideas used by professional copywriters. These ideas will ensure your copy is sharper and more compelling, and that it is produced more efficiently.

Specifically, our tutor will give you:

  • a simple process to help you get each copywriting project under way faster
  • essential advice to make your sentences flow more smoothly
  • a set of tools to help you become a more confident and productive writer
  • invaluable insights into how to structure and present your copy
  • clear guidance on how to breathe more life into your words
  • tips on how to avoid common copywriting mistakes
  • expert advice on how to optimise your copy for the search engines
  • a powerful technique to help you find the right words and phrases for your copy, more quickly and easily.

Communicating with younger citizens
If you need to communicate with a younger audience - children, teenagers or young adults - our tutor can also offer plenty of
practical advice. This includes some important dos and don'ts.

Writing for younger EU citizens requires particular care and attention. Drawing on his personal experience of writing for the 11 to 24 age group, our tutor can offer clear guidance on what has to be done.

Who should attend
Our ‘Communicating with EU citizens’ course is designed for two to six people, though we can also train larger groups. A one-to-one masterclass is available, as well.

You can benefit from this course if:

  • you are relatively new to copywriting and would like a solid grounding in how to write for a multi-national audience
  • you want to learn how to tackle a broad range of communication tasks
  • you have important information to convey to an international audience but fear your words are not connecting with them
  • members of your team will shortly be starting work on a major communication project and you want to raise the quality of their writing before the project gets under way.
